Implementation Research

Implementation Research

Generating evidence to optimize interventions, improve efficiency, and scale impact across sectors.

Proxima’s service focuses on three main objectives:

1.Generating Evidence to Optimize Interventions

Unlike traditional research that focuses on if an intervention works (effectiveness), Implementation Research focuses on how and why it works (or doesn’t work) in a specific context.

    • Focus Areas: The research systematically investigates factors that influence the successful delivery and uptake of a program. This includes:
    • Acceptability: How are the program and its components received by the target beneficiaries and implementing staff?
    • Feasibility: Can the program be realistically delivered given the available resources, skills, and infrastructure?
    • Fidelity: Is the program being delivered as intended by the original design?
    • Context: What specific local, political, or cultural factors are acting as barriers or facilitators to implementation?

2. Improving Efficiency
By collecting real-time, context-specific data, Implementation Research helps organizations identify and fix “bottlenecks” in their delivery system, making the program more cost-effective and resource-efficient.

Process Improvement: This involves analyzing every step of the delivery chain—from supply chain management and training protocols to monitoring and supervision—to find faster, cheaper, or more sustainable ways to achieve the same or better outcomes.

Adaptation vs. Fidelity: The research informs when and how an intervention should be adapted (changed) to fit a local context without sacrificing its core, evidence-based principles (fidelity).

3. Scaling Impact Across Sectors
The ultimate goal is to generate actionable knowledge that informs decision-makers, allowing successful interventions to be expanded or adopted by other organizations and governments.

Informing Policy: The evidence generated is specifically designed to answer programmatic and policy-level questions, making it highly relevant for government ministries and international organizations looking to mandate or fund large-scale programs.

Sustainable Scale-up: Proxima uses the evidence to design a clear roadmap for scale-up that is financially, technically, and politically sustainable, ensuring the impact lasts long after the initial funding ends.

Why it is Crucial for Proxima’s Clients
In the humanitarian and development space, an intervention proven effective in one country or region often fails in another due to differences in culture, health systems, or political environments. Implementation Research bridges this divide by providing the tools to:

Move from Piloting to Routine Practice: Turning a small, successful pilot project into a fully integrated, national program.

Minimize Waste: Preventing the costly failure of rolling out an un-optimized program across a large area.

Ensure Equity: Highlighting whether an intervention is reaching the most vulnerable and marginalized populations, and adjusting the delivery strategy if necessary.
